DOC.Coimbra presents new key visual art for the 2027 edition

DOC.Coimbra – International Documentary Festival presents its new visual identity for its 2027 edition. For this project, we invited artist Mary Whalley to create an art piece that reflects the values of our festival. Mary Whalley used the 19th century photographic process of cyanotype alongside watercolour painting in other to capture pressed flowers, resulting in a unique graphic universe that stems from her explorations and studies of migrations, which are reflected by the use of plants considered "invasive" in Portugal, such as the Ipomea indica.

Mary Whalley is a New Zealand visual artist currently living in Coimbra who specialised in traditional printmaking techniques, such as cyanotype. Her work often uses the language of plants in order to explore themes of immigration and resilience, themes that align strongly with the values DOC.Coimbra holds.
